Hospitality and catering is the world’s largest service industry meaning there are a wide range of roles within the trade, ranging from working in a bar or restaurant to theme parks or even cruise ships. This can sometimes make it difficult to decide which area of the sector you would like to work in but also means there are many opportunities to progress and gain experience working in multiple areas.

Working in hospitality and catering means you will often be in a customer facing role and the ability to welcome visitors in a friendly, welcoming manner is essential.

There are a wide range of jobs within the hospitality and catering trade including;

  • Chef
  • Waiter
  • Bar staff
  • Coffee barista
  • Room service
  • Restaurant manager
  • Hotel manager

People working in hospitality and catering will often be required to work evenings and weekends, and peak trading times such as Christmas. Many roles will also involve being on your feet for most of the time.

What about career progression and salaries?

Your pay and benefits will depend on experience and the kind of employer you work for, but as a guide:

  • Bar staff can expect to earn around £14,000 per year
  • A chef can earn around £20,000 per year
  • Experienced restaurant managers can earn up to £30,000 per year
