What is an Apprenticeship?

An Apprenticeship is a mix of real work and learning. Apprentices earn a wage and get experience whilst working towards a number of qualifications. The advantage of Apprenticeships is that they are mainly work-based, integrating training into the day-to-day work. So instead of losing hours to off-site study, employers can actively participate in the training process, whilst learners gain invaluable skills to apply to their work.

An Apprenticeship follows a Level 2 programme and can lead onto an Advanced Apprenticeship which is a Level 3 programme.

Apprenticeships are a proven way for businesses to train their workforce. Apprenticeships can make organisations more effective, productive and competitive by directly filling skills gaps.

Focus Training delivers training for Apprenticeships and Advanced Apprenticeships. There are a number of elements to each Apprenticeship and this is called the framework. Each Apprenticeship framework has three main strands:

• Competence based element (sometimes referred to as an NVQ)
• Technical element (sometimes called the Technical Certificate)
• Skills element (sometimes called KeySkills, but this will be changing to Functional Skills)

The three strands are sometimes accompanied by additional qualifications to give the most relevant skills and knowledge required for the job.
