Linda Lands Learning Award

March 2006

A manager at one of the biggest W C Rowe shops in Cornwall has been named top adult learner in Devon and Cornwall.

Linda Wilkinson left school in 1981 with very few qualifications and worked on a factory production line before starting to work part time in the Cornish baker's Camborne and Helston premises. She was transferred to Redruth to cover a staff sickness, and she did so well that she was made assistant manager there.

She then enrolled on a Customer Service Level 2 course run by Plymouth-based Focus Training under the Free2Learn Employer Training Pilot scheme funded by the Learning and Skills Council (LSC).

Free2learn runs in Devon and Cornwall from September 2004 until the end of March 2006, when a new national scheme will start. It aims to offer employers the opportunity to develop and train their staff in new skills.

Linda (40) completed her course in August 2005, and then went on to complete a free Health and Safety course, also run by Focus Training.

She is now manager of W C Rowe's Penzance shop - one of the company's biggest - and has been named top adult learner by the Training Provider Network in the region. Linda said: "I wanted to get on and realised I didn't know enough so I needed to improve my skills.

Beryl Bailey of Focus Training said: "Linda was a model learner and realised the courses we offered would help her progress in the company. W C Rowe, like many employers, knows the very real benefits of training for their staff members."

Karen Eustace, area manager for W C Rowe, said: "Linda always had potential but lacked the skills needed to progress. The Free2Learn course was just the thing she needed and we are delighted she has done so well."
